On January 28, 1908, Anita Delgado, a beautiful, but barely literate, Spanish teenager, danced a brief flamenco in a Madrid nightclub where she caught the eye of a visiting Indian prince, Sir Jagatjit Singh, the Maharaja of Kapurthala. They married and she spent the next 18 years living in opulent luxury, in the Himalayan foothills. She was the Maharaja's fifth and favorite wife, and he showered her with attention. What ensued was a grand story of love and betrayal that unfolded over almost two decades, in the heart of an India that was on the verge of disappearing.
